Staircase Chandeliers Long Drop Fixtures With Raise Lower Access Systems for Hotels

October 31, 2026

A staircase chandelier is defined by one number nobody wants to get wrong: the drop. Set it too long and it becomes an obstacle in the stairwell; too short and it disappears into the roof void. In a three storey stairwell the difference between the two is often less than half a metre, which is why we model the fixture against the stair geometry rather than quoting from a standard length.

Drop Planning Against the Stair Void

We work from a section drawing through the stairwell, not a plan, because the sight line from the ground floor and the sight line from the landing are different. The fixture usually needs to sit below the top landing level so it reads as a full fixture from the entrance, while still clearing head height wherever a person can stand.

Fixtures are supplied with an adjustable suspension range rather than a fixed chain, so the final height can be set on site once the flooring and handrails are complete.

Access for Cleaning and Relamping

The hardest part of owning a tall stairwell chandelier is cleaning it. A fixture above eight metres can only be serviced from a platform, a scaffold or a rope access team, and all three are disruptive in a hotel.

A raise and lower system solves this by bringing the fixture to floor level: a ceiling mounted hoist, guide cables to keep the descent vertical, and a locking collar that holds the working height. The system is specified at drawing stage, because retrofitting a hoist above a finished stair void is a demolition job.

Safety and Heritage Constraints

Long drop fixtures swing. We specify a stabilising cable set for stairwell installations and a secondary suspension independent of the primary fixing, which also satisfies most heritage and insurance inspections.

In listed buildings, fixing points are often restricted to existing members. Our drawings show the fixing pattern and offer a spreader frame where new penetrations are not permitted, along with a lighter crystal dressing option to reduce load.

The value of a good staircase fixture is measured over a decade of servicing, not on the day it is switched on. Planning the drop and the access system at design stage is what keeps it looking correct in year eight.
