Art glass is the one material in decorative lighting where variation is part of the value and also the biggest risk. Hand blown elements carry small differences in thickness and tone, which is exactly what makes the fixture feel made rather than manufactured, but a second order six months later can arrive visibly different if the batch is not controlled.
Glass is blown in small batches and each batch is recorded by colour formula, furnace temperature and blowing team. With clear and single tone glass the variation is minimal; with reactive and layered colours it is not, and recording is the only way to repeat a result.
For projects with a defined interior palette we produce a sample set of five elements from the production batch and ask for written approval before dressing the fixture. That step removes the most common source of dispute on art glass work.
Glass is heavy and brittle, so the frame does the carrying. Elements are held in brass or steel cups with a compliant gasket rather than clamped, which allows slight movement without point loading, and each element sits in a cradle that survives a knock without transferring force to the neighbour.
Metal finishes are chosen to complement the glass rather than compete with it: brushed brass and dark bronze work with most palettes, while polished finishes tend to create hot reflections through coloured glass.
Art glass breaks in transit more often than crystal, so packing is designed around it: individual foam cradles, elements packed separately from the frame, and a carton drop test at the start of a programme rather than after the first complaint.
Every shipment carries a breakage allowance of five to eight percent depending on element size, plus a small spares kit for the elements most exposed on the outside of the fixture.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Element type | Hand blown glass, single or layered colour |
| Diameter range | 500mm to 2000mm |
| Frame | Brass or steel, brushed or plated |
| Lamp | E14 or E27 LED, 2700K or 3000K |
| Allowance | 5-8 percent breakage on glass elements |
| Lead time | 25-35 days including sample approval |
Art glass rewards a buyer who approves a physical sample and records it. The fixture is never identical to the next one, and that is the point, provided the difference stays inside the range the designer signed off.
